Our take
Navy Federal's HELOC is notable for its 20-year draw period and its willingness to lend against a high share of home equity. For eligible members, the combination of lender-paid closing costs and no annual fee makes it one of the lower-cost lines to open and keep. The trade-offs are eligibility, which is limited to military members, veterans, Department of Defense employees and their families; availability, since it's not offered in Texas; and processing time, which the lender estimates at 30 to 40 days, longer than many online lenders. Borrowers who are eligible and not in a hurry should get a quote.
