Does a HELOC show on your credit report?
Yes. How it affects your score depends on how the bureaus classify it and how much of the line you use.
Does a HELOC show on your credit report?
Yes, a HELOC shows on your credit report as an open account with a limit and balance. Some scoring models treat it like a credit card, so a nearly maxed line can lower your score. Others exclude HELOCs from card utilization. On-time payments help either way.

What shows and what it does
- The inquiry from applying: a small, temporary dip.
- The account with its limit, balance and payment history.
- Utilization if counted as revolving: a $90,000 balance on a $100,000 line looks like 90% usage.

Keeping it neutral or positive
- Leave headroom: open a slightly larger line than you'll use.
- Pay down large draws quickly when you can.
- Set up automatic payments so you never miss one.
Example: how utilization could change
Suppose you have $8,000 on cards with $20,000 in limits (40% utilization) and open a $100,000 HELOC, drawing $30,000 to pay the cards. Card utilization falls to 0%. If a scoring model counts the HELOC as revolving, total revolving utilization becomes $30,000 of $120,000, or 25%, still lower than before. If it doesn't, you're at 0%. Either way, the score impact is usually positive after the first statement cycles.
How other lenders read it
When you later apply for a car loan or a mortgage, the lender counts your HELOC payment in your debt-to-income ratio. Some mortgage lenders also consider the unused line, since you could draw it. If you're planning a purchase or refinance, ask your loan officer how they'll treat the line before you draw.
Keep an eye on reporting
Check that the HELOC reports the correct limit. A line reported with no limit, or a limit equal to the balance, can make it look maxed out. If that happens, ask the lender to correct it.

Questions people ask
Does closing a HELOC hurt my credit score?
Slightly, in some cases. Closing a HELOC can lower your score a little if the line was counted as revolving credit with a low balance, because your available credit drops. The effect is usually small.
Do HELOC payments count in my debt-to-income ratio?
Yes, on future loan applications. Lenders use the actual payment, or a calculated payment if the balance is zero and the line is open, depending on the program.
Is a HELOC listed as a mortgage on a credit report?
No, not as your first mortgage. The lender reports a HELOC as a home equity line, a separate account from your first mortgage, with its own limit, balance and payment history.
Keep your HELOC working for your credit
- Pay on time every month; set autopay at least for the minimum.
- Keep the balance well below the limit when you can.
- Check your reports a month or two after opening that the limit reports correctly.
- If you close the line, confirm it reports as "closed by consumer," not by the lender.
- Don't max out the line right before applying for another loan.
Example
A borrower's new line reports a $0 limit by mistake; the lender corrects it after a call, and her utilization returns to normal.
Also asked
Does a HELOC count as a revolving account?
Often. Many HELOCs show as revolving accounts on credit reports, but how scoring models treat them varies, and some exclude HELOCs from card utilization.
Does an unused HELOC help my credit score?
Slightly, at most. An unused HELOC can lower overall utilization in scoring models that count it, but the effect is usually small.
Will the lender report my HELOC to all three bureaus?
Most HELOC lenders do report to all three bureaus. If you don't see the line on one of your reports after a few months, ask the lender, and check that it shows the correct limit.
How long does a closed HELOC stay on my credit report?
A HELOC closed in good standing can remain on your credit report for up to 10 years, which helps your credit history.
