HELOC vs. balance transfer card

A 0% transfer is the cheapest debt there is, for as long as the promo lasts. The question is whether you can clear the balance before it ends.

Short answer

Which is cheaper for paying off debt, a HELOC or a balance transfer?

If you can pay the whole balance plus a 3%–5% transfer fee within the promo window, usually 15–21 months, the transfer wins. If the payment that takes is out of reach, a HELOC with a 5-year payoff is usually cheaper and calmer.

The math on $30,000

OptionUpfront costMonthly to finishInterest
0% for 18 months, 3% fee$900$1,717 for 18 months$0 if cleared
HELOC at 7.75% APR, 5-year payoff$0–$600$605 for 60 months$6,283

The transfer saves money only if you can pay about $1,717 a month. Pay $605 instead and roughly $20,000 is still on the card when the promo ends, now charging the card's standard rate, often 20%–29%.

Limits people miss

  • Credit limits. A new card's limit may be well under your total debt, so you may only move part of it.
  • No transfers between cards from the same bank.
  • New purchases on the transfer card may accrue interest right away.
  • Approval for the best offers usually needs good credit and low utilization, which people consolidating often don't have yet.

Using both

A common split: move what you can clear in the promo window to a 0% card, and put the rest on a HELOC with a fixed payoff. Run both pieces through the debt payoff calculator to check the combined monthly payment.

Running the $30,000 example

Say you qualify for an 18-month 0% transfer with a 4% fee. The fee adds $1,200, so you owe $31,200. To clear that before the promo ends, you'd pay about $1,733 a month. A HELOC at 7.75% APR paid off over 5 years is about $605 a month and about $6,280 in interest.

If you can truly pay $1,733 a month, the transfer costs $1,200 and the HELOC costs about five times that. If you can't, whatever is left when the promo ends usually jumps to a card rate in the 20s. Leave $10,000 on the card after 18 months and you're paying about $200 a month in interest on that alone.

What usually gets in the way

  • Credit limits. New transfer cards often approve limits of $5,000–$15,000, not enough for a $30,000 balance. You may only move part of it.
  • Same-issuer rules. You can't transfer a balance between two cards from the same bank.
  • New purchases. On many transfer cards, new purchases don't get the 0% rate, and payments may go to the 0% balance first. Don't use the card for anything else.
  • Late payment. One late payment can end the promotional rate early on some cards.

A combined plan

For balances above about $15,000, a mix often wins: move what you can pay off within the promo window to a transfer card, and put the rest on a HELOC with a 3- to 5-year payoff. You pay the transfer fee only on money you'll actually clear at 0%, and the HELOC handles the remainder at a rate well under the card's.

More questions

Does a balance transfer need an appraisal or equity?

No. It depends only on your credit and income, which is why it can work for renters or owners with little equity.

What if I already did a balance transfer and the promo is ending?

Open the HELOC a month or two before the promo ends, and pay off the card the week before the regular rate starts. Check whether the issuer charges deferred interest (common on store cards); a true 0% transfer doesn't.

Checklist

  • Promo length, fee and the rate after.

Also asked

Which is faster to set up, a balance transfer or a HELOC?

A balance transfer is faster to set up, usually taking days, while a HELOC takes two to five weeks. If you need relief now, a transfer can bridge the gap until the HELOC line opens.
