Should you use a HELOC to pay for a wedding?

It's cheaper than a credit card, but a wedding is a one-day expense secured by your home.

Short answer

Should you use a HELOC to pay for a wedding?

Only if you'd otherwise put it on cards and can repay within 2–3 years. Then a HELOC costs far less in interest: $30,000 over 3 years at 7.75% APR is about $937 a month, versus about $1,191 on a 24.9% card. If repayment would stretch longer, scale the budget instead, and never borrow for it interest-only.

Whose home, whose debt

When parents borrow against their home for a child's wedding, the debt and the risk stay with the parents. If the couple will pay part back, agree on it in writing. If the couple are borrowing against their own home, check the payment fits their budget along with every other new expense of married life.

Shrinking the number first

  • Guest count drives most of the cost: food, rentals and venue size.
  • Off-peak dates (Fridays, Sundays, winter months) can cut venue prices significantly.
  • Get every vendor contract in writing with the payment schedule, and pay deposits with a credit card for purchase protection, then move the balance to the HELOC.

Timing the draws

Vendors usually take deposits months ahead and final payments the week of the wedding. Draw each payment when due, so interest builds only on what's spent.

A simple payoff plan

Set the payoff period before the first deposit. If you'll repay $30,000 over two years, put about $1,350 a month on autopay starting the month after the wedding. Send cash gifts straight to the balance. If you can't fit $937 a month for a 3-year payoff into your budget, the wedding budget is too big for the loan.

Wedding budget checklist

  • Set the total, including attire, rings and honeymoon, before booking anything.
  • Decide who contributes what.
  • Choose a payoff period and monthly amount before the first draw.
  • Keep a 10% cushion for last-minute costs.

Also asked

Should we pay wedding vendors directly from the HELOC?

Not necessarily. The easiest way is to draw HELOC funds to your checking account and pay vendors from there. For deposits, a credit card adds purchase protection if a vendor goes out of business; then pay the card from the HELOC before interest posts.

Is a personal loan better for a wedding?

Often, for smaller budgets or if you need money within days. A personal loan doesn't involve your home and has a fixed payoff. For $25,000 or more with two to three years to repay, a HELOC usually costs less in interest.

What happens to a wedding HELOC if the wedding is canceled?

Vendor contracts decide what's refundable. Return any refunds straight to the HELOC. Wedding insurance can cover deposits for covered reasons like illness or vendor failure; read what it excludes.

Can wedding gifts from guests pay down a HELOC?

Yes, and it's a good use of them. A lump sum paid soon after the wedding cuts the balance and the interest from the start.

Should the couple or the parents take out the wedding HELOC?

Whoever owns the home takes the HELOC and is fully responsible for repaying it. If parents borrow and the couple promised to help, write down the amounts and dates. If the couple owns a home and borrows, they should check the payment against their other new costs, like insurance and household expenses.
